A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CHAMBER

On the night of February 22, 1962 a group of 50 business and professional leaders gathered at the Oldham County Courthouse to discuss organizing a Chamber of Commerce. According to archives, LaGrange had just lost out to Eminence, in its bid to attract a major company, mainly due to lack of united community organization. In response to this problem, these men were seeking a way to become unified and make La Grange more competitive. During this meeting, it was pointed out that "no other organization can do for a community what a Chamber of Commerce can. While service clubs are beneficial, they cannot do the job of selling the community."

Thus, the La Grange-Oldham County Chamber of Commerce was born. The first board of directors consisted of Ben Howard Abbot (president), Raymond Wilburn, Jesse Dixon and Alton Ross. Membership immediately grew to nearly 100. Milton Carl Stoess, Sr. was awarded the first "Outstanding Citizen of the Year" (later renamed Oldham Countain of the Year), by the Chamber in 1963.

The Chamber was successful in attracting numerous businesses to Oldham County over the years. In 1985, the Oldham County Economic Development and Industrial Foundation was formed to enhance this effort. An executive director of this organization as well as the Chamber, was hired in 1987. The two groups later merged in 1988, and the executive director became full-time president/CEO of the combined organization.

One of the Chamber's most notable achievements came in 1987 with the founding of the Oldham County Educational Foundation (OCEF), in partnership with the Oldham County School System. By 1990, Chamber membership was over 200.

Other significant achievements started by the Chamber include the Business Fair in 1995 (now called Oldham Community Showcase), the Oldham County Arts Association in 1997 and Leadership Oldham County, also in 1997. Chamber membership continued rapid upward growth by 1998. In May of 1998, Joe Schoenbaechler was appointed the new president/CEO of the Chamber. In March, 1999, the Chamber moved to its current location, 412 E. Main St. in LaGrange.
